A funded visiting elective opportunity for MS4 students in the Department of Radiology
Welcome to the Duke Radiology Visiting Student Opportunity and Mentorship Program
Duke Radiology is committed to creating an inclusive clinical, educational, and research environment for talented individuals from all backgrounds. The Radiology Opportunity Scholarship provides funding for promising MS4 medical students to complete a 4-week visiting advanced elective rotation at Duke. Participants also receive career mentoring and administrative support throughout the program.
The aim of the program is to improve equity and provide career mentorship for high achieving students who demonstrate exceptional financial need and/or attend U.S. medical schools with limited radiology resources.
Applicants for the scholarship must also meet at least 1 of the following eligibility requirements:
- Demonstrate exceptional financial need, as documented by receipt of a Federal Pell Grant as an undergraduate student
- Currently attend a medical school that has not previously been ranked as a Tier 1 research school by U.S. News and World Report AND is not affiliated with a residency program ranked in the top 50 for interventional radiology or diagnostic radiology by Doximity
All applicants must also attend U.S. medical schools that have existing visiting medical student affiliation agreements with Duke School of Medicine (View the current list of affiliated schools.)
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Each year, up to two MS4 Opportunity Scholars will be selected for a funded visiting advanced elective in the Department of Radiology at Duke University School of Medicine. Students are required to enroll in either the 407C Advanced Elective for Diagnostic Radiology or 406C Advanced Elective in Interventional Radiology course during the summer or fall terms. Program benefits include:
- A four-week advanced clinical rotation in diagnostic or interventional radiology at Duke University Hospital
- Up to $2,500 in scholarship funding for travel, housing, and related expenses
- Dedicated faculty and resident mentors for career guidance and networking
- A welcome dinner with current residents
- Meetings with the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education and Residency Program Directors
- Meetings with the Department of Radiology’s Director of Undergraduate Medical Education and Residency Program Director(s)
APPLICATION PROCESS
Qualified applicants should submit an online program application. Additionally, candidates must concurrently complete a visiting elective application through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) platform. Scholarship offers will be extended only after the VSLO application has been approved. We strive to provide timely decisions to assist with planning and scheduling.

Please note: Participation in this program is independent of the NRMP residency application process for Diagnostic or Interventional Radiology at Duke. Selection for this program does not influence residency outcomes, and non-selection does not impact future residency consideration.
