DAILY MORNING CONFERENCE
Every morning begins with a 7:30 AM resident conference. These conferences are a carefully designed organ-system based series of 290 didactic lectures given by the radiology faculty. Occasionally incorporated into the schedule are clinical correlation lectures given by Duke faculty from other clinical disciplines, case-based physics lectures by our department physicists, and research design lectures by our in-house statisticians. Review of normal anatomy and radiologic- pathologic correlation is also incorporated into the lecture series.
PHYSICS INSTRUCTION
One week-long “mini-courses” are offered each year in the physics of MR, CT, nuclear medicine and ultrasound as well as in Radiation Biology and Safety. The courses are presented by both our physics and clinical faculty. In addition, our medical physics faculty provide monthly interactive sessions based on the RSNA/AAPM modules, as well as case-based reviews of artifacts and other practical application of imaging physics.
DAILY CASE CONFERENCE AND HOT SEAT
Each rotation has a daily subspecialty-specific teaching conference. These conferences are usually interactive case conferences given by the radiology faculty to only those residents rotating on the service. Our residents regularly rate these sessions as the most valuable teaching and learning of their training.
All of the residents attend “Hot Seat” conferences at noon on Monday and Friday, giving ample opportunity to practice discussing unknown cases in front of peers.
BOARD PREPARATION
Beginning March 1, the clinical and medical physics faculty provides daily conferences for 3rd year residents preparing for the ABR Core Exam.
RADIOLOGY GRAND ROUNDS
The entire Department of Radiology gathers each Thursday morning for Radiology Grand Rounds. The curriculum is designed to expose the faculty, residents and fellows to a variety of relevant topics, and to speakers including:(1) Duke Radiology faculty, (2) invited non-radiology Duke faculty from the medical center and the University and (3) invited speakers from outside of Duke. Named lectureships include The Robert Wilkerson, M.D. Lecture in Nuclear Medicine, The Ralph Heinz, M.D. Lecture in Neuroradiology, and The Herman Grossman, M.D. Lecture in Pediatric Radiology
INTERDEPARTMENTAL CONFERENCES
The various divisions within the Department of Radiology participate in numerous interdisciplinary conferences, including Hepatobiliary, Neurosurgery, Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Orthopedics, Pulmonology, Vascular Surgery, Sports Medicine, Rheumatology, Urology, and Otolaryngology. These conferences are optional to interested radiology residents, when clinical duties allow.
SECTIONAL ROLL-OUT CONFERENCES
Most of our individual sections have regular “roll-out” conferences, in which the most interesting cases of the day or week are reviewed as a group. The Musculoskeletal and Abdominal Imaging sections have daily afternoon roll-outs. The Neuroradiology section holds theirs twice-weekly. Roll-outs in Pediatric Radiology and Nuclear Medicine are held weekly.
DEDICATED INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY CONFERENCES
IR Conferences will be attended by Residents on the IR service. Off-service residents will attend conferences as possible.
ADDITIONAL CONFERENCES ATTENDED
Monthly combined Vascular Journal Club (often held offsite in the evening hours in conjunction with the Division of Vascular Surgery), vascular malformation working group, hepatopancreaticobiliary multidisciplinary conference, musculoskeletal oncology tumor board, colorectal tumor board, melanoma tumor board, and urologic multidisciplinary conference.
