Interpretation of Outside Imaging Studies

The Department of Radiology provides a service for secondary interpretations of outside imaging studies upon referring physician request.  Secondary interpretations may be deemed necessary by a clinical service to clarify a point of uncertainty, or guide tertiary or quaternary care decisions.

All requests for interpretation of outside studies will include a formal interpretation by a credentialed radiologist that will be included in the patient’s electronic health record.

Please submit a Radiology Interpretation Requisition along with the image CD to  one of our Radiology Information Release Units located at:

As with all other imaging requests, an electronic order for the interpretation of outside images must also be placed in the Maestro Care system (DPDC).  For ordering help in Maestro Care, please see our Quick Tips. For physicans who do not have access to Duke’s electronic ordering system, please complete our Radiology Referral Form and submit along with interpretation requisition.

The referring physician is responsible for notifying his/her patient that a fee will be charged for the professional interpretation of the outside study.
