Photon Counting Imaging at Duke

Duke Radiology has obtained an innovative new generation of photon-counting computed tomography from Siemens Healthineers, one of the first research prototypes worldwide. “A major milestone in medical imaging, the technology is expected to provide an unprecedented level of resolution and disease characterization, well beyond what is offered by conventional CT and even prior prototype Photon Counting systems,” said Drs. Ehsan Samei and Daniele Marin, the Co-Principal Investigators of the project.

As a leading center in advanced CT technology and practice, this development is a capstone of years of science, precision care, and industrial partnership pursued by our department. Exploring how this new technology can advance patient care, a consortium of investigators from our department and beyond will pursue multiple investigational opportunities, with the first human subject anticipated later this month.
