Overview h2
Interventional Radiology (IR) was awarded primary specialty status by the American Board of Medical Specialties in 2012. Because of the increasing complexity of IR procedures and increasing involvement of the IR physician in clinical patient care, training in Interventional Radiology is currently undergoing transition from a 1-4-1 pattern (one year of internship, 4 years of Diagnostic Radiology, one year of IR fellowship) to a 1-3-2 pattern (one year of internship, 3 years of Diagnostic Radiology, two years of IR training).
