Nuclear Medicine
The nuclear medicine section provides the clinical service for the Duke Hospital and the Durham VA Medical Center. The entire spectrum of studies that are performed for clinical and research purposes in nuclear medicine and nuclear cardiology is provided by the nuclear medicine service.
The section has several research projects. Ongoing programs are in the technology of single photon emission computed tomography, applications of nuclear cardiology and positron imaging, therapeutic applications of monoclonal antibodies, etc.
Both one and two year training programs are available. The rotations in the one year program include 4 months of clinical nuclear medicine, 4 months of nuclear cardiology, and 4 months of positron emission tomography. The two year program consists of at least 12 months of clinical training with the remaining time available for research. The exact program depends on the background and previous training of the individual. A didactic course of physics and instrumentation, radiochemistry, radiopharmacy, and radiation safety is given during the 2 year program. Additional clinical rotations or research can be elected during the second year. We are able to provide residents flexibility in their training depending on their previous training and interests.
